At Cabinet City, one of our favorite things to do is take the classic closet and turn it upside down. Not literally, of course. But today’s typical closet contains everything from shoes and scarves to jewelry and jackets – which makes one-size-fits all storage frustratingly inefficient.

Of course, we’d love to have you pay us a visit today for a closet consult. But if you need immediate relief from a cluttered closet, start with these top 10 tips:

  1. Triage. Unused items are the worst enemy of an organized closet. Go through and donate any and all unused items.
  2. Divide and conquer. In an all-weather climate like Wisconsin’s there’s no need to have off-season items taking up space. Store those items in stackable bins or even in another room.
  3. Break up with the bar. A great way to gain more space is to remove a bar if you have more than one, or to shift an existing bar up or down.
  4. Create variety. Use different shapes and sizes of shelving, bins, hanging hooks, and other accessories to mix up options.
  5. Color code. Group items within categories by color to find what you’re looking for more easily.
  6. The eyes have it. Keep your most frequently used items at eye level, and go up or down with less frequently used items.
  7. Add wheels. Rolling carts can be a great option to maximize depth while still offering easy access.
  8. Dump the door. If your closet door keeps getting in the way, replace it with a more flexible curtain or divider.
  9. Don’t waste wall space. Even small sections of wall can serve a purpose when you add hooks or a hanging basket.
  10. Sort on-site. If you have space, place a few bins or stackable shelves inside or just outside your closet to immediately sort items for repair, dry cleaning or donation.
